Ruby Slippers Theatre, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, and Playwrights Guild of Canada present the Advance Theatre Festival Week 1 to February 3

THE ADVANCE THEATRE Festival is in the midst of its first week, showcasing new works written and directed by female and gender-nonconforming artists who also identify as BIPOC.

February 1, Canadian-Iranian writer Aki Yaghoubi debuts Parifam, the story of a woman who draws and paints in her private studio, detached from family and friends. Her world is turned upside down when her childhood friend Ramak re-enters her lifem and they grapple with the hidden truths that linger in their past. Panthea Vatandoost directs.

February 2, Lil’wat playwright-performer Yvonne Wallace (Ucwalmicw), who has also curated this year’s fest, gives a first look at her new one-woman ReZonance, a “mixed-race tragicomedy” about a woman who works in language revitalization and what happens when she gets invited to plan an Indigenous retreat based on land pedagogy. Renae Morriseau directs.

And February 3 sees a reading of Jessica Liang’s Surrender, in which a group of 20-somethings navigates life, transitions, and friendship in the face of loss. Melissa Oei directs.

Watch for details on Week 2, which sees a workshop production of an Advance Theatre offering from last season, Dil Ka by Lee Nisar, directed by Patricia Trinh, February 16 and 17 at the Shadbolt.
