AFAM African Fashion Week Vancouver 2022 hits the catwalk, February 19
Design, dance, and music aim to shift narratives about Africa and the African diaspora
African Fashion and Arts Movement Vancouver presents AFAM African Fashion Week Vancouver 2022 on February 19 at 6 pm at Newmont Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, Arts Club Theatre Company (162 West 1st Avenue) as part of Black History Month.
EVERY YEAR DURING Black History Month, African Fashion and Arts Movement Vancouver highlights emerging designers and artists from Africa and the African diaspora at AFAM African Fashion Week Vancouver, an event hat also features a marketplace and live music and dance.
It’s all to shift narratives about Africa and the African diaspora by re-branding the perception of Africa as a whole; raising awareness of Africa’s expanding fashion industry; supporting local entrepreneurs; and promoting social change in Africa, according to founder Yao Zeus Mohammed.
Mohammed is also the founder of Mawogan Fashion. Inspired by the joy and brightness in the fabrics his ancestors made their own, his designs are made by artists in Lome, Togo.
Safari Kabumbe is another featured designer. The founder of Kabumbe Fashion fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo and lived in Uganda for several years before coming to Canada as a refugee in 2013. He followed his passion and grew his tailoring and fashion business out of his home until 2015, when he opened the Kabumbe storefront in Guildford.
Other artists taking part this year are Hana Woldeyes of jewellery company is beadedbody; Jason Bempong, founder of Sleepless.Mindz, which focuses on fashion and visual arts; Navoir’s Taiwo Precious, who’s originally from Nigeria and who swapped civil engineering for fashion design; and Victori Dibri, Nigerian from the Urhobo tribe of Delta state, who launched fashion brand Vickendelstyles in 2018; among others.
The event also features awards in categories such as fashion designer of the year, male and female model of the year, photographer of the year, hairstylist of the year, African DJ of the year, makeup artist of the year, and more.
