Anvil Theatre presents the Montreal-based Huu Bac Quintet on May 6 at 7:30 pm, for a night of world-influenced jazz music infused with intensity, discovery, and sheer talent.
Founded in 2013 by Chinese-Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Huu Bac Quach, the award-winning quintet features pianist Guillaume Martineau, bassist Olivier Babaz, drummer Etienne Mason, and violinist Zoé Dumais.
Quach moved to Montreal from Vietnam at the age of two, and first started his musical journey at McGill University with jazz guitar. Soon thereafter, he began the discovery and mastery of several other instruments: the dan bau (Vietnamese monochord), the erhu (Chinese fiddle), and the quena (Andean bamboo flute).
The musician has made an ever-growing name for himself by performing his own extraordinary compositions with his quintet across Canada, the U.S., China, Korea, Peru, and Africa. The skillful fusion of traditional music from Quach’s heritage and North American jazz delivers a truly compelling dialogue between cultures.
