The Dance Centre’s popular Discover Dance! series returns for in-person performances this fall, starting the season on October 28 with a program featuring choreographer and dancer Arno Kamolika.

Kamolika is a renowned exponent of the classical Indian style of Bharatanatyam. This beautiful and expressive dance form draws on poetry, music, mythology, and spirituality, exploring stories and emotions through intricate movements and percussive rhythms. She will share narrative and non-narrative-based dances, ranging from traditional solos to vibrant contemporary pieces inspired by Bengali literature and culture.

Kamolika will be joined on the Scotiabank Dance Centre stage by dancers Malavika Santhosh and Kiruthika Rathanaswami, and three musicians—Curtis Andrews (mridangam), Shankhanaad Mallick (vocals), and Sharanjeet Singh Mand (sitar).

Born and raised in Bangladesh, Kamolika trained in both Manipuri and Bharatnatyam before fully devoting herself to study Bharatnatyam.A graduate in architecture, she draws from her training of various disciplines like music, mime, theatre, and other dance forms to add layers to her practice and to create an informed artistic narrative. Her rich repertoires have taken her across the globe at various festivals in USA, Germany, India, and Bangladesh.

The Dance Centre has been presenting the Discover Dance! series since 2002. The noonhour shows are designed to provide entertaining, informative, and accessible introductions to a wide range of dance genres, featuring everything from contemporary, ballet and flamenco to African, Chinese, and Indigenous dances, and more.
