Not only does Arts Umbrella's new state-of-the-art facility on Granville Island offer more space, more light, and more studios, its curriculum gives as much emphasis to students’ emotional and intellectual development as it does to the physical.

This philosophy provides young artists with a life-changing dance education and the tools needed for success in and out of the studio—as Open House events on August 12 and 17 will show.

The approach comes with quality and artistic leadership behind it. An artistic and pedagogical authority in dance, Artemis Gordon was named artistic director of Arts Umbrella Dance in 1992. Since then, she has developed the program’s international recognition, touring the Arts Umbrella Dance Company to Europe, Asia, and the United States, and fostering collaborations with companies around the world.

In 2015, Gordon secured an affiliation with Ballet BC, increasing opportunities for emerging artists and amplifying the impact of international choreographers in Vancouver. In 2016, the artistic director also won the YWCA Women of Distinction award in the Arts, Culture, and Design category. The following year, she was also honoured with a City of Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award in Dance.

Gordon leads a department whose unique approach nurtures young performers to their full potential. Learn more about Arts Umbrella Dance by signing up for its Open House on August 7 or 12 by emailing Natalie Kardum at nkardum@artsumbrella.com.

And note that the recent move to the new building on Granville Island has offered even more avenues for students to learn about different styles of dance from an early age. For example, in the upcoming season, Arts Umbella has been able to extend the Level 2 dance class packages so that students going into Grade 2 this fall can explore Musical Theatre or Modern dance along with the usual introduction to Ballet.

As an added bonus, these Level 2 classes take place on Saturdays and run from 9 to 11:30 am (for Ballet and Musical Theatre) or from 12 to 2:30 pm (for Ballet and Modern), so families have ample time to enjoy the Granville Island Market while dancers are dancing.
