BC Movement Arts Society and Chutzpah! PLUS are thrilled to partner for the Canadian premiere of the stunning show Grass is Green from April 25 to May 2, across various venues.

The piece opens on April 25 at 7:30 pm, at the Norman and Annette Rothstein Theatre as part of Chutzpah! PLUS. It then continues with five more performances as part of BC Movement Arts Society’s North Island Contemporary Dance Series: Sointula’s Athletic Hall on April 27 and 28 at 7:30 pm; ‘Namgis First Nation’s Lawrence Ambers Memorial Recreation Centre in Alert Bay on April 29 at 3 pm; Port Hardy’s Civic Theatre on April 30 at 7 pm; and finally, the Tidemark Theatre in Campbell River on May 2 at 7 pm.

A work by San Francisco and New York-based dance company UNA Productions, Grass is Green blends contemporary dance, drag performance, and live music in consideration of both humanity and the land.

Performed with exquisite artistry by six dancers and drag queen-cellist-pianist Rose Nylons, this highly physical and exuberant work embodies a cycle of rebirth, represents queer intimacy, and highlights moments of communal joy, grief, and connectivity.

Choreography for the show is by Chuck Wilt, in collaboration with the piece’s performers: Kira Fargas, Dominica Greene, Dasol Kim, Rebecca Margolick, Hadassah Perry, Chuck Wilt, and Rose Nylons. In addition to live piano and cello performed by Rose Nylons, the dance features exciting music by Donna Summer, Sylvester, Michael Nyman, and more.

UNA Productions was founded in 2013 by Wilt, its artistic director and choreographer. The company creates original productions that incorporate contemporary dance, live music, and drag performance.

UNA’s mission is to discover and communicate deeply rooted embodiments of human existence through physically powerful dancing, unapologetically Queer imagery and storytelling, and the celebration of individuality that brings vibrancy and joy to the world.

Grass is Green was co-commissioned by The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center for its 2021 world premiere in Baltimore, Maryland. It was created with support from artist-in-residence placements at the 92nd St. Y’s Harkness Dance Center, Brooklyn College through the CUNY Dance Initiative, and Berkeley Ballet Theater.

Ticket information for the BC Movement Arts Society shows can be found here, and tickets for the show in Vancouver are available through the Chutzpah! Festival.
