Celebrate the arrival of spring with Behind the Keys, an intimate cabaret concert curated and headed by Vancouver Bach Choir’s music director, Leslie Dala, who also performs on piano.
Behind the Keys takes place April 9 at 7:30 pm at the Orpheum Annex.
Joining Dala is Rachel Fenlon, a rising star whose “extraordinary talent” (Place des Arts) includes prodigious skill in both piano and operatic vocals. In addition to having a résumé full of notable operatic productions, the Berlin-based Fenlon has forged a fascinating and innovative career as a self-accompanied singer, to much acclaim.
Fenlon and Dala combine their considerable talents in a program that spans from fresh takes on beautiful classics to jewels of contemporary art music, including Gyorgy Kurtag’s expressive Bach piano transcriptions; Debussy’s colourful and nuanced Ariettes oubliées; Toru Takemitsu’s dreamy, meditative Rain Tree Sketch I; and Ahania’s Lament by Juno-winning Canadian composer Samy Moussa. The program finds its dramatic and rapturous conclusion in Olivier Messiaen’s Poemes pour mi.
Audience members will enjoy cabaret-style seating, relaxing at a table with friends, or with a bird’s eye view in more distanced seating in the Annex’s balcony. Drinks will be available, including a complimentary beverage with each ticket.
All proceeds from the evening go toward supporting the choral education and performance programs of the Vancouver Bach Choir. Currently celebrating its 91st season, Vancouver Bach Choir is an award-winning symphonic choir committed to offering vibrant and culturally diverse choral experiences to its audiences. As one of the largest choral organizations in Canada, the Vancouver Bach Choir has eight choirs ranging in age from five to 80.
Tickets for Behind the Keys are $69 each or $250 for a table of four.
