At BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University, Vancouver-based soul singer Dawn Pemberton takes the stage accompanied by long-time CapU-based band Kenté on March 1 at 7:30 pm.
Pemberton’s music has been described as vintage soul, drawing from early influences of legendary artists like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Mavis Staples, and Diana Ross. While this modern-day dynamo may draw deep from artists with rich history, her pure music style is distinctly her own. She has shared stages with the likes of Maceo Parker, Linda Tillery, the Sojourners, John Boutté, and Dutch Robinson.
Kenté’s forté is grooves, achieved through a musical amalgam of double horns, double keys, and double guitars, along with bass, drums, percussion, and back-up vocalists. On the band’s repertoire for this concert are dance tunes by Curtis Mayfield, Average White Band, Charlie Parker, the Beatles, and more, plus originals by Pemberton.
Tickets are available at capilanou.ca/centre.
