When three-time Grammy-nominated jazz singer Kate McGarry and guitarist Keith Ganz perform at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University on February 2, their repertoire—classics from jazz and pop, mostly from the ’60s and ’70s—is bound to be familiar.

But the delightfully artful way McGarry and Ganz interpret these gems often surprises. The duo makes the songs their own, meeting with high critical praise worldwide.

Their most recent album release, What to Wear in the Dark, impresses with pristine production and top-notch jazz players that create beautiful backdrops for McGarry’s pure-toned, easy-going deliveries. She performs distinctive versions of Steely Dan’s “Barrytown”, Paul Simon’s “Feelin’ Groovy”, The Eagles’s “Desperado”, and George Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun”.

McGarry’s voice has been compared to Betty Carter, Rickie Lee Jones and even Janis Joplin on her more bluesy pieces, while Ganz plays guitar with what JazzTimes calls “sublime subtlety”– with Pat Metheny and George Benson obvious influences.

Accompanying the duo—who’ve been married 20 years—are CapU Jazz Studies students performing in both large and small ensembles.

Tickets to the 7:30 pm show are $35 at capilanou.ca/centre.
