American jazz scientist Scott Robinson cuts loose with CapU Jazz Ensembles on February 3

New Jersey-based artist is fluent in all jazz genres, as well as a multitude of reed and brass instruments

Scott Robinson switches up his brass instruments with the same flourish as he does jazz styles.

 
 

Known for an uncanny ability to excel on virtually any reed or brass instrument (not to mention occasional oddities, including the theremin), New Jersey-based Scott Robinson is also exceedingly fluent in any jazz genre, from the pre-swing-era to the avant-garde. 

The star, who appears at Capilano University’s BlueShore Theatre on February 3, has performed with celebrated bandleaders like Buck Clayton, Lionel Hampton, Paquito D’Rivera and Maria Schneider.  

Robinson’s discography now includes more than 275 recordings, four of which have won Grammy Awards. The 20 albums he’s released as band leader have garnered five-star reviews from Down Beat Magazine and other respected sources worldwide. His 2019 album Tenormore, by the Scott Robinson Quartet, won Album of the Year in a JazzTimes readers’ poll.

Robinson, who collects rare instruments, has produced an astonishing array of music for his ScienSonic Laboratories label. He has performed at a U.S. presidential inauguration and his group was selected to be the closing act at the Knitting Factory’s Sun Ra Festival.
