Montreal-born Grenadian Canadian music artist Kaia Kater brings her jazz-fuelled voice, ace band, and deft songcraft to the York Theatre on February 11 at 7:30 pm, in a co-presentation by BlueShore at CapU and The Cultch.

Through her artful banjo playing and lush songwriting, Kater draws on influences rooted in Quebec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia, all of which reflect the diversity of her background. Inspiration comes from her ties to the Canadian folk-music scene; her college years spent soaking up Appalachian music in West Virginia; her father’s upbringing in Grenada; and her recent work in film composition.

Kater’s latest album, Strange Medicine, features cinematic arrangements with guest artists Taj Mahal, Allison Russell, and Aoife O’Donovan. The release—which effortlessly combines political and personal lyrics with soulful pop, folk, and psychedelia—has garnered rave reviews from NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, the Guardian, Rolling Stone, and No Depression.

Tickets to see Kater are available here.
