Tibet-born, New York-based singer-songwriter Yungchen Lhamo performs at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Arts at Capilano University on January 25 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
Lhamo has built her career on Tibetan folk and sacred songs while also incorporating sounds from French, Russian, Middle Eastern, and British influences.
On her seventh album One Drop of Kindness, the vocalist-composer sings mostly in Tibetan, accompanied by a versatile ensemble that conjures a singular fusion of Buddhist chant, Indian percussion, Tibetan folk, and cool jazz. Instruments include everything from piano, flute, drums, and electric guitar to didgeridoo, Indian violin, Turkish oud, and Armenian duduk oboe.
Lhamo’s spellbinding vocals, which flow seamlessly from low guttural throat singing into long-sustained high notes, have been featured on projects with Peter Gabriel, Bono, Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, and more.
At BlueShore at CapU, the singer will be backed by a multi-instrument three-piece band.
Tickets are at capilanou.ca/centre.
