The Port Theatre in Nanaimo is presenting Boca del Lupo’s Red Phone from August 13 to 15 as part of its Spotlight Series for the 14th annual Nanaimo Fringe Festival. Admission is free with a Nanaimo Fringe Button, and reservations open on August 8.

Conceived by Sherry J Yoon and designed by Jay Dodge with technology by Carey Dodge, Red Phone is a conversation that viewers will not soon forget. Part theatre and part social intervention, Red Phone is an audience-to-audience performance that utilizes the intimacy of a phone call and the technology of a teleprompter. It takes place between two handcrafted, fully enclosed phone booths outfitted with a vintage red phone and an integrated teleprompter.

Two at a time, audience members engage each other in a five-minute conversation in the booth. The act of having the conversation with an unseen partner provides an anonymity that adds to the intimacy of the performance, encouraging participants to be the actor in their own theatrical experience.

Red Phone is a one-of-a-kind performance that has been described as the theatrical equivalent to singing in the shower. Scripts for inside the booths have been commissioned from playwrights across the country and around the world.

Red Phone last played in B.C. at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival in 2023, and has since gone on to tour to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Antofagasta, Chile; Guanajuato, Mexico; Toronto, and Ottawa. The production’s return to B.C. comes ahead of another set of international tours.

Boca del Lupo, which means “mouth of the wolf”, is a theatre company based on Granville Island. It is led by founders and co-artistic directors Sherry J Yoon and Jay Dodge.

Registration for Red Phone is required to reserve a spot for the performance. On August 13 and 14, time slots can be booked from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, 3:30 to 5:30 pm, and 6 to 7 pm; and on August 15, available time slots are from 2 to 4 pm, 5 to 7 pm, and 7:30 to 8:30 pm.
