Boca del Lupo is set to feature two exciting VR presentations at The Fishbowl on Granville Island from June 21 to 24. Showings are at 5:30 pm and 7 pm each night, along with additional time slots on June 23 and 24.

The program will see the return of last year’s hit show written and performed by Karen Hines, Pochsy at the Airport Hotel, as well as a new piece by acclaimed playwright Yvette Nolan, Reconciling.

Pochsy at the Airport Hotel is a post-lockdown experiment in three-dimensional virtual reality created for Boca del Lupo’s LivePerformance360 series.

The show urges audience members to forget about Tripadvisor, trash Trivago, and instead dive into a 360-degree view of an enchanted, uncharted Hospitality Zone. In an airport hotel on the shores of the River Styx, Hines’s Pochsy—whose name is an anagram for psycho—mourns the loss of her job at Mercury Packers. The character navigates her struggles being “vegan-fluid”, and tries to conceal an unnatural preoccupation with bubble wrap.

Throughout the piece directed by Sandi Somers, concerns abound in Pochsy’s mind: Should she check her messages for the 50th time? Or solve the perennial question of why a tiny can of Pringles costs $11.95?

Guests are invited to come sit with Pochsy on the edge of her king-sized bed, on the precipice of existence, in this meditation on globalization and the future of the human soul. Sound design and editing for both Pochsy at the Airport Hotel and Reconciling is done by Carey Dodge.

In Reconciling, a splintering relationship is brought in for counselling, which leads to the revelation of previously unspoken feelings, dreams, and desires. Audiences are placed right in the centre of the piece, which is written by Yvette Nolan and directed by Boca del Lupo’s co-artistic director Sherry J. Yoon. Featuring performances by Alana Hawley Purvis and Manami Hara, Reconciling is a 360-degree experience that is captivating, honest, and compelling.

Nolan is an Algonquin playwright, director, and dramaturg known for her contribution to Indigenous theatre with opera libretti, such as Shanawdithit; and plays, including Annie Mae’s Movement and The Birds.
