Gateway Theatre explores stigma around mental health with JD Derbyshire’s hilarious memoir-play, Certified

Written and performed by Derbyshire and directed by Roy Surette, the show runs in-person at half capacity with physically distanced seats at Gateway Theatre from March 8 to 20. 

 In Certified, Derbyshire turns the audience into their personal mental-health review board to assess their sanity, taking the audience on a hilarious and heart-aching journey through the mental health system. Viewers grapple with questions like: how do we define “crazy” and who gets to decide? In this case, the audience does. 

Certified has garnered two Jessie Richardson Awards for Outstanding Script and Critics’ Choice Innovation Award in the 2019 production at Touchstone Theatre. 

The Gateway Theatre show features lighting design and production management by Jillian White and sound design by Dana Ayotte.

Gateway Theatre recognizes that traditional theatre etiquette can be restrictive for many patrons. For the entire run, Gateway is offering an “open environment” where patrons can relax and enjoy the show at their own comfort level.
