Chan Centre for the Performing Arts hosts vibrant Malian vocalist Oumou Sangaré at the Chan Shun Concert Hall on April 7 at 7 pm.

Sangaré is renowned worldwide for her powerful music, which often features revolutionary messages about women’s rights, tradition, and poverty. Having collaborated with the likes of Alicia Keys, Aya Nakamura, and Beyoncé (who sampled “Diaraby Nene” for her 2019 The Lion King release), she continues to break through barriers separating continents and musical styles.

Notable waymarks on Sangaré’s rich and fruitful journey include some of the most definitive recordings in the history of contemporary African music: 1993’s Ko Sira, 1996’s Worotan, and 2009’s Seya, the latter nominated for a Grammy Award. Timbuktu (2022) is the latest act in her unparalleled musical epic, consecrating an artist who rose from the poor neighbourhoods of Bamako, Mali to become a globally distinguished musician and activist.

Tickets are available at the Chan Centre.
