Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon, which originally premiered in 1899, will be presented by UBC Opera at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts from February 1 to 3 at 7:30 pm, and on February 4 at 2 pm.
Long before Disney’s Cinderella, there was Massenet’s Cendrillon. Based on Charles Perrault’s 1698 version of the classic fairy tale, Cendrillon finds the titular hero, whose real name is Lucette, aching to go to the ball. With the help of some magic, she is whisked away on a carriage and transformed into an unknown beauty. Will true love prevail before the clock strikes midnight?
This French version of the beloved story is set to exquisite orchestration with soaring vocal lines. The UBC Opera Ensemble will be joined by the UBC Orchestra under the baton of guest conductor Gordon Gerrard, who was recently appointed artistic director of City Opera Vancouver.
Tickets are available via the Chan Centre.
