B.C. artists have taken top prizes in the classical category of the Western Canadian Music Awards held over the weekend.

Local composer Stephen Chatman, whose works are widely played by Canadian orchestras and who is a professor of composition at UBC, tied for Composer of the Year with Northwest Territories artist Carmen Braden.

And flutist Mark Takeshi McGregor, a soloist, chamber musician, and improvisor who’s performed everywhere from Music on Main to the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra, took top prize as Classical Music Artist of the Year.

In other categories, Vancouver’s Snotty Nose Rez Kids, recently featured in the Vancouver International Film Festival opening movie Monkey Beach (set in their Haisla hometown of Kitamaat), were double winners, taking home the award for Indigenous Artists of the Year as well as Rap & Hip-Hop Artists of the Year.
