British-Australian theatre-maker Jeremy Goldstein is presenting his multimedia storytelling show Truth to Power Café at this year’s Chutzpah! Festival, which takes place from November 1 to 10. The performance will be held at the Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre on November 3 at 7 pm, with an option for digital streaming.

From Adelaide to Zagreb and now in Vancouver for its Canadian premiere, Truth to Power Café is a profound theatrical reflection on loss, hope, and resistance. This internationally acclaimed and award-winning performance is told through memoir, image, film, poetry, music, and true stories from the people of Vancouver in response to the question, “Who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?”.

Whether it be personal, professional, or political, speaking truth to power is a non-violent means of conflict resolution, the origins of which lie in the anti-war movement. It may be parents, a sibling, politician, landlord, neighbour, banker, boss, or a best friend—but it’s time to tell them the truth before it’s too late.

Truth to Power Café is inspired by the political and philosophical beliefs of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter and his inner Jewish circle “The Hackney Gang”, which included Jeremy Goldstein’s late father, Mick Goldstein, and poet and actor Henry Woolf.

Goldstein’s Truth to Power Café is currently seeking eight participants from across B.C.’s Lower Mainland to participate in the show on November 3. Participants of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds are welcome, as long as they have an authentic story to tell related to the prompt, “Who has power over you and what do you want to say to them?”.

Selected submissions will be developed into short monologues of up to 500 words and presented by the participants in their own voice. Participants can elect to memorize their monologue, or read it from a page or their phone as part of the performance event. The submission deadline is Monday, October 7 at 11:59 pm; more details and an online application form are available here.
