Chutzpah! Festival workshops riff on clowning, comedy, and matzo balls

Apart from its stunning array of performances, the Chutzpah! Festival also offers a stimulating lineup of workshops, inviting members of the public to get to know and learn from our festival artists in exciting ways.

All are based out of the Jewish Community Centre (950 West 41st Avenue).

Amid this year’s highlights is Maya Ciarrocchi’s Site: Yizkor series of workshop on November 13, 15, and 16 at the Sidney & Gertrude Zack Gallery. In their collaboration, Site: Yizkor, Jewish Canadian multimedia artist Ciarrocchi and composer Andrew Conklin explore questions like: Who honours the spaces left by the dead? How and why do people, cultures, and identities disappear? In this series of companion workshops to that installation, Ciarrocchi leads writing reflections.

November 16, Sink or Swim: Riffing on the Essence of Matzo Ball features David Buchbinder in the JCC Lounge, the Grammy-nominated musician, producer, cultural thinker and first-time author taking a humorous deep dive into the contentious issue of matzo ball construction.

The Inner Voice and the Unknown Space: Tools for Cross-Cultural Creators Workshop features David Buchbinder, Mark Rubin, and Michael Ward-Bergeman, November 18 in the JCC Dance Studio. In this three-hour hands-on workshop, the members of Music at the Center of the River share tools and approaches to challenge and deepen our artistic practice when working with an established tradition, finding our own expression, and exploring working with the cultural traditions of other communities with authenticity and respect.

November 17, Wild Country's Wild Clown Workshop with
Edith Tankus features the artist sharing her experience as a clown, theatre maker, workshop leader, and mother of two in this special program geared to those caring for children, elderly parents, or other loved ones.

And November 25, American comedian Liz Glazer leads a Stand-Up and Storytelling Workshop.
