SECRETS, SEXUALITY, AND SPIRITUALISM: these are just some of the themes that emerge in Cloudless, a new memory play by writer José Teodoro. The audio drama is loosely based on real events, with each of its five characters struggling to come to terms with the mysterious disappearance of two young women during a diving expedition off the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. As they grapple with the incident, their lives take their own unexpected twists and turns.

Presented by Canadian Stage and produced by Periphery Theater and 11 Hours, Cloudless is a collaboration between Toronto and Vancouver artists, including Carmen Aguirre (core artist at Electric Company Theatre and co-founder of the Canadian Latinx Theatre Artist Coalition) and Pedro Chamale (co-founder of rice & beans theatre). It features an original score by Stephen Lyons (Fond of Tigers),

Teodoro had originally written the script for the stage. In response to COVID-19, director Alison Wong devised an innovative, suspense-building structure: each of the first five episodes features a single character delivering their portion of the play. In the last episode, all of the voices come together as the story unfolds in its entirety.

An alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre’s Writer’s Lab, Historic Joy Kogawa House’s writer-in-residence program, Seattle’s Annex Theatre’s Hothouse, and Playwrights Theatre Centre’s Playwrights Lab, Teodoro has also participated in several thematic residencies at the Banff Centre.
