Two-time Grammy Award-winning Canadian instrumental band BADBADNOTGOOD are performing at this year’s Vancouver International Jazz Festival on June 29 at 7:30 pm. Hosted by Coastal Jazz & Blues Society at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the Marquee Series concert will feature a guest appearance by the Mary Ancheta Quartet.

BADBADNOTGOOD’s expansive music straddles the line between ’70s soul-jazz, alternative hip-hop, and experimental electronica. The Toronto-based group first gained attention in the early 2010s, playing jazzed-out covers of tracks by the likes of Odd Future, MF Doom, and A Tribe Called Quest. Since then, they’ve built a catalogue of vivid, hooky originals and collaborated with hip-hop, dance, and neo-soul artists like Ghostface Killah, Kaytranada, and Kendrick Lamar.

Originally founded by bassist Chester Hansen, keyboardist Matthew Tavares, and drummer Alexander Sowinski after they met through Toronto’s Humber College jazz program, BADBADNOTGOOD now consists of Hansen, Sowinski, and saxophonist Leland Whitty.

On their latest of five studio albums, 2021’s compositionally complex and melodically adventurous Talk Memory, the group explores fusion, new age, and orchestral influences. The album was nominated for both a 2022 Polaris Music Prize and Jazz Album of the Year at the 2023 Juno Awards.

BADBADNOTGOOD has toured and performed extensively worldwide, including at the 2016 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. With far-ranging interests, obsessions, and talent, the group’s sound sits right in the pocket of stellar rhythm.

Led by Vancouver-based keyboardist Mary Ancheta, the Mary Ancheta Quartet is composed of saxophonist Dominic Conway, bassist Matt Reid, and drummer Joel Fountain.

Known for killing it alongside Khari Wendell McClelland, Kimmortal, Amanda Sum, and scores of other great artists, Ancheta steps into the spotlight with her organic, modern take on jazz and electro-funk. The keyboardist inspired by the likes of Squarepusher, The Meters, John Schofield, and Prince knows what’s up when it comes to arresting melodies and gritty, irresistible grooves.

Founded in 1985, the Coastal Jazz & Blues Society is a community-based arts non-profit that establishes Vancouver as a centre for creating and exchanging music between communities.
