Coastal Jazz & Blues Society has just announced the latest additions to the 2024 Vancouver International Jazz Festival calendar, including a festival closing night performance by Wayne Horvitz Electric Circus, workshops and performances with three Artists in Residence, and music education and mentorship opportunities.
Led by renowned keyboardist-composer-conductor Wayne Horvitz, Wayne Horvitz Electric Circus is a large and charged ensemble that uses sampled grooves, improvised sonic exploration, light projections, and a boatload of talent to reimagine classic soul, funk, rock, and psychedelic.
At Performance Works on June 30 at 7:30 pm, Horvitz will lead a stacked 13-piece ensemble featuring French saxophonist Sakina Abdou and Brooklyn-based electric bassist Shahzad Ismaily, alongside a host of local musicians: acoustic bassist Nikko Whitworth, violinist Meredith Bates, drummer Kai Basanta, guitarists Jeff Younger and Madeleine Elkins, keyboardist Chris Gestrin, trumpet player JP Carter, trombone player Nebyu Yohannes, baritone saxophonist Chris Kelly, conga player and percussionist Jack Duncan, and vocalist Shruti Ramani.
The Coastal Jazz Artists in Residence program was created to spotlight the individual work of select artists while offering them the opportunity to connect with local talent and dedicated festival audiences. The society is partnering with Western Front and the Talking Stick Festival this year to host Abdou, Ismaily, and DJ O Show as the Artists in Residence for various artist talks, workshops, and performances.
The 39th annual Vancouver International Jazz Festival runs from June 21 to 30 at locations around Vancouver and the North Shore. Tickets for performances are on sale now at coastaljazz.ca.
