As part of its 24th season, Co.ERASGA is presenting What on EARTH, a new program consisting of three ensemble works created by three international dance artists. The world premiere will take place at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre from September 18 to 20 at 8 pm.

Co.ERASGA’s founding artistic director Alvin Erasga Tolentino has teamed up with two of the company’s guest-artists in residence—Toronto’s Naishi Wang, and Berlin’s Alvin Collantes—to forge creativity together in this 75-minute program. What on EARTH supports Co.ERASGA’s vision of fostering environmental stewardship through dance artistry.

What on EARTH examines humanity’s connections to the environment with the goal of attuning creative practices to the undeniable effects of climate change. The three productions seek to question witnesses’ relationships to their surroundings while acknowledging that amid all the chaos and uncertainty, there lies a beacon of hope—a collective call for action, resilience, and solidarity.

The first of the new works premiering, Fire-Air-Water-Earth, explores the concept of humans being at one with nature’s four sacred elements as we face the worsening climate-change crisis.

In the second piece, Weathering Rhythms, dancers raise voices, stomp feet, and embody hope in harmony with nature, urging viewers to confront the realities of the climate crisis. The work simultaneously celebrates resilience as an act of cheerleading, accrediting the determined communities striving for a sustainable future.

Bulkan, the third work in the series, delves deep into the fiery depths of human emotion, drawing parallels between the raw power of volcanic eruptions and the tumultuous landscape of one’s innermost feelings. Beneath sheets of rage, passion, destruction, and burning desires, dancers find solace within the chaos of the formless.

The pieces will be performed by dancers Yuha Tomita, Ysadora Dias, Samantha Krystal, Juolin Lee, danielle Mackenzie Long, and Juan Villegas.

Based in Vancouver, Co.ERASGA creates cross-cultural and experimental works. The company supports and contributes to the development and enhancement of contemporary dance globally while pursuing new and challenging projects that provide artists with important opportunities.
