The Craft Council of British Columbia presents The Earring Show, an annual exhibition that highlights contemporary jewellery design, which will be available for viewing from May 4 to 18 online and in person. An opening reception will be held at 7 pm on May 4 at the CCBC Gallery on Granville Island, where the winner of each category will be announced.

The Earring Show sheds light on the timeless connection between craft and culture, and how they influence each other. It is an event that provides a novel opportunity for the general public to engage with wearable art.

The exhibition serves as a unique space that presents earrings as a snapshot of contemporary high-level craftsmanship. Over the past 7,000 years, earrings have acted as a window into cultural practices.

At times, earrings have been used to introduce new norms into society; in other moments, elements of culture have been expressed through the pieces of jewellery. The exhibition recognizes the importance of earrings throughout history in their various roles—from adornment and status markers, to protests and statements.

This year, The Earring Show will see over 200 handmade earring submissions from around the world, crafted using an extensive variety of mediums. These earrings are anything but neutral; they express a passion for art, design, technique, a societal concern, a cultural statement, or simply the physical expression of the artist’s craft.

The artwork presented often relays a story that speaks to a part of the makers’ identity. Through the exhibition, these unique pieces and their stories have the potential to become a part of the wearers’ own narratives. This reflects one of the goals of the show: to create shared experiences around craft between makers and wearers.

The Earring Show began as a one-day local event, and over the past 10 years has grown in its scope, meaning, and representation—all while holding true to its roots as a contemporary reflection of craft and culture.

While the in-person exhibition ends on May 18, the show’s earrings will be available for viewing and purchase online up until July 31.
