Cello maverick Cris Derksen plays live from her living room, with guinea pigs, February 26 to April 9 via Surrey Civic Theatres
Gary, Lloyd, and Albert will watch her thrilling fusion with front-row seats
Surrey Civic Theatres streams Cris Derksen In Concert from February 26 to April 9
IF YOU HAVEN’T heard cello innovator Cris Derksen’s thrilling fusion of classical, powwow, and hip-hop and techno beats, you have the chance to hear the artist perform straight from her Toronto living room starting Friday.
From there, she works loop pedals and a drum machine along with her stringed instrument, in music that echoes, haunts, and sometimes makes you want to get up and dance.
The Cree artist, who hails from northern Alberta, has deep roots in Vancouver’s arts scene, studying at UBC and serving as principal cellist at the UBC Symphony Orchestra. She’s toured the world, and was set to perform in Sydney, Australia, when the pandemic hit.
For this concert, expect her usual wildly diverse range of music, including some of her older work, as well as brand-new music composed during the pandemic. Check out the video below for a taste of how she blends influences.
You can watch the show along with her live audience: her three guinea pigs—Gary, Lloyd and Alfred—and her Mexican rescue dog.
