DanceHouse, in partnership with Blackout Art Society and Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre, presents Sankofa Danzafro’s electrifying episodic work The City of Others (La Ciudad de los Otros) at the Vancouver Playhouse on February 21 at 8 pm and February 22 at 2 pm and 8 pm.
Choreographed by Sankofa Danzafro’s artistic director Rafael Palacios—a legend of Latin American dance—The City of Others was created in celebration of Colombia’s 159th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. The work delves into the country’s history and culture to examine its complex and often-agonizing past.
Ten performers bring Palacios’s vision to life, blending contemporary dance with high-energy techno beats inspired by Latin and hip-hop music. Featuring both live and recorded music, the piece also incorporates traditional Colombian songs, rhythms, and dances.
The City of Others includes pre-show talks on both performance days and a post-show social on February 21.
