Early Music Vancouver's War to Peace concert to mark 350th anniversary of composer Heinrich Schütz's death, November 5

Cappella Borealis, musica intima, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and more join for momentous tribute

Pacific Baroque Orchestra is one of several ensembles joining for the concert.

On November 5 at St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church, a stellar group of soloists and ensembles will gather to help Early Music Vancouver mark the 350th anniversary of prolific composer Heinrich Schütz’s death.

In the concert called From War to Peace: Heinrich Schütz and His Time, sopranos Arwen Myers and Danielle Reutter-Harrah, alto Nicholas Burns, tenor Lawrence Williford, and baritone Sumner Thompson will join forces with musica intima, Cappella Borealis, the Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme, and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Alexander Weimann.

Directly affected by the violence and political tension that accompanied the Thirty Year’s War (from 1618 to 1648), Schütz produced works of comfort and lamentation to directly comment on the conflict. Alongside the famous Saul, Saul, was verfolgst du mich? and settings of the Psalms of David, the concert will include the hymn of thanks “Danket dem Herren” (“Thanks be to God”) with its trumpet calls that might be heard as a call to arms, or as a celebration of peace.

The show starts at 7:30 pm, with a pre-concert Talk at 7 pm that features UBC School of Music’s Dr. Alex Fisher in conversation with Weimann.
