Early Music Vancouver presents Handel’s cantata Apollo e Dafne at the Christ Church Cathedral on September 15 at 7:30 pm.

In Apollo e Dafne, Handel retells the ancient story of a boastful god’s frustrated love and a determined nymph’s unbending resistance. This dramatic cantata exudes the fresh vitality and self-assurance of a newly famous composer at his homecoming from Italy, and hints at the future glories of his opera career.

The performance features Canadian soloiests soprano Jacqueline Woodley, who recently had her Montreal Symphony Orchestra debut under Kent Nagano; and B.C.-born, New York-based baritone Tyler Duncan, who’s performed at the likes of the Toronto Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera and Wigmore Hall.

Alongside this colourful early work, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra presents two instrumental pieces: Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major (“La Notte”) featuring bassoonist Nathan Helgeson, and the overture to Handel’s Agrippina.

Tickets are available here.
