Early Music Vancouver will present Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, an undisputed masterpiece of spiritual and emotional depth, at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on August 1 at 7:30 pm.

At times intimate and reverent, grand and dramatic, thrilling and sensual, the work pairs brilliant instrumental writing with impressive choruses and solos to create an opulent tribute to the Virgin Mary, a testament to Monteverdi’s attention to the expressive power of music.

Unprecedented in scale for its time, the purpose of the Vespers of 1610 has long mystified historians and musicians alike. Possibly created as a job application, perhaps even for the attention of Pope Paul V, the work helped Monteverdi secure the coveted post of maestro di cappella at Venice’s most renowned basilica, San Marco.

In this performance, Alexander Weimann will lead 10 international soloists and a collection of 17th-century instrumentalists, including the peerless Bruce Dickey on cornetto.
