Elektra is thrilled to be presenting the world premiere of The Lost Words: A Spell Book. The whimsical, evocative musical interpretation of the best-selling book of the same name by author Robert Macfarlane and visual artist Jackie Morris takes place at Pacific Spirit United Church on October 1 and 2.
The “spells” and watercolours in the duo’s magical book were meant to conjure back into children’s lives 20 words about nature that were removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary.
In Elektra’s concerts, readings from the book by actor Laara Sadiq will precede short, new works by 10 Canadian composers performed by Elektra and a small ensemble of six instrumentalists. Morris’s wonderful paintings will be projected on screen to complete the celebration of this literary “re-wilding of childhood”.
Elektra Women’s Choir, known internationally for its leadership in developing compelling new repertoire for women’s choirs, has commissioned the composers to set two “spells” each.
The composers are: Carmen Braden (Yellowknife), Alex Eddington (Toronto), Katerina Gimon (Vancouver), Nicholas Ryan Kelly (Penticton), Ramona Luengen (Burnaby), Don MacDonald (Nelson), Monica Pearce (born in PEI, based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana), Marie-Claire Saindon (Montreal), Rodney Sharman (Vancouver), and Stephen Smith (Vancouver).
The performances will be a treat for all eyes and ears.
