Formed in 2016 and based in Germany, Esmé Quartet is comprised of four Korean female musicians: violinist Wonhee Bae and Yuna Ha; violist Jiwon Kim; and cellist Ye-eun Heo.
After winning the first prize and four special prizes at the 2018 London Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, the ensemble has gone on to perform at notable events and venues such as Lucerne Festival, Auditori di Barcelona, and Opéra de Lille. In 2019, the group was named quartet in residency at the Aix-en-Provence festival.
Taking its name from an old French term meaning “being loved”, Esmé Quartet was named the inaugural artists in residence of Seoul, Korea’s Lottie Concert Hall for the 2020-21 season.
Esmé Quartet performs at the Vancouver Playhouse on March 22 at 7:30 pm. Friends of Chamber Music is proud to be part of their first North American tour and welcomes this dazzling young quartet to Vancouver.
The quartet will perform Mozart’s Quartet No. 21 in D major K575; Debussy’s Quartet in G minor, Opus 10; and Beethoven’s Quartet in E minor, Opus59 No.2 “Razumovsky”.
