It’s Arts Umbrella’s most anticipated event of the year: Expressions Theatre Festival is the culmination of a year of work for its Pre-Professional Theatre Program and Yearlong Intensive students.

Back in person for 2022, all shows will take place at the Jack and Darlene Poole Theatre at Arts Umbrella, with productions on various dates from April 29 to June 19.

Tuck Everlasting, performed by the Musical Theatre Troupe, is a musical adaptation the beloved children’s novel of the same name by Natalie Babbitt.  Directed and choreographed by Erika Babins, it tells the story of 11-year-old Winnie Foster, who must decide if she would like to live forever after discovering a secret in the woods behind her house. What does it mean to have a friend? When is it better to hold on and when to let go? How do you want to spend your life? Those are just some of the questions that spring up in this magical rendition.

Treehouse, performed by the Senior Theatre Troupe, is written by Alexis Diamond and directed by Paul Moniz de Sá. Jenny’s dad, Eric, has her life all planned out following her high school graduation: business courses at the local college and then working with him in the family business. But Jenny has other hopes and dreams, if she’s only brave enough to take a leap into the unknown.

The Junior Theatre Troupe performs Kindness, which offers an unforgettable lesson in compassion and listening to one another. Director Seamus Fera and assistant director Laura Reynolds sensitively capture the reality of children’s feelings in this story of three kids navigating the small and large catastrophes in their lives

Adapted from the iconic Nickelodeon series,  SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical is full of chaos, heroism, and hope as SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, and all of Bikini Bottom face total annihilation of their undersea world. The show will be performed by the Musical Theatre Troupe, directed by Andy Toth, and choreographed by Hailey Fowler.

Artificial Purpose is an Original Devised Show written and performed by the Laboratory Theatre Troupe and directed by Laura McLean that takes place in the year 2077, when the bestselling tech on the market are lifelike AI robots.

Finally, Year End Showcases—Theatre Intensives is a week-long celebration of Yearlong Theatre Intensive Program students, with a plethora of presentations on offer.
