Friends of Chamber Music welcome back the Mandelring Quartet, acclaimed as one of the top string quartets worldwide, on October 29 at 3 pm at the Vancouver Playhouse.
The Mandelring Quartet last performed for Friends of Chamber Music in 2016. They were scheduled to return in 2021, but the performance was delayed due to the pandemic. Now, the German ensemble is back in their 40th-anniversary year.
The concert opens with Dmitri Shostakovich’s lyrical String Quartet No. 1 in C Major, Opus 49. Hungarian-Austrian composer György Ligeti’s ever-popular “Métamorphoses Nocturnes” follows. The afternoon performance concludes with Beethoven’s hauntingly beautiful String Quartet No. 15 in A Minor, Opus 132.
The Mandelring Quartet consists of violinists Sebastian Schmidt and Nanette Schmidt, violist Andreas Willwohl, and cellist Bernhard Schmidt. This spring they performed in the Spanish Royal Palace in Madrid for the fourth time, using Stradivari instruments from the royal collection.
