Friends of Chamber Music welcomes the Signum Quartet from Germany for its first Vancouver concert on April 2 at 7:30 pm.
Offering performances of unsparing expressivity, intimacy, and vitality, the ensemble has been hailed as one of the most adventurous and outstanding string quartets of today’s age, in their performances of both modern pieces and the mainstream repertoire.
For this concert, audiences will hear a mixed program full of melodic beauty and tonal range: Schubert’s Auf dem Wasser zu Singen, arranged by the ensemble’s violist Xandi van Dijk; (rage) rage against the (2018) by Matthijs van Dijk, Xandi’s brother; Schulhoff’s Five Pieces for String Quartet; Schubert’s String Quartet No. 1; Tolstoy’s Waltz in F Major; and Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, “Kreutzer Sonata”.
Catch the quartet’s music, which has been praised by The Times as “played with fury, tenderness, terror, [and] sardonic humour”, at the Vancouver Playhouse.
Tickets are at Friends of Chamber Music.
