Gateway Theatre is delighted to present the BC premiere of In Wonderland—an imaginative and contemporary retelling of Lewis Carroll’s classic novels, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass—to close its 2021-22 season.
Directed by Haysam Kadri, the delightful production features just three actors—Sarah Roa, Natascha Girgis (Nine Dragons, 2019), and Graham Percy—who fantastically portray all the story’s iconic characters and transform right before audiences’ eyes.
Theatre magic will be fully realized onstage through projections, extraordinary scenic elements, lighting illusions and shadows, costumes, and puppetry, which all play a vital role in the storytelling.
Commissioned by Alberta Theatre Projects, playwright Anna Cummer was inspired to create In Wonderland after reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with her children. Cummer presents her vision of the story as a variety show with everything from clown acts to musical numbers, complete with slap-stick and poetry.
Gateway Theatre is offering a Pay-What-You-Will preview on April 7 to provide access to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend. Opening is on April 8, and In Wonderland runs to April 16.
Taking into account patrons’ varying comfort levels, Gateway Theatre is keeping reduced audience capacity for all performances of In Wonderland to accommodate physically distanced seating.
