The Dance Centre is presenting a day of free events celebrating the art of dance for International Dance Day—and this year sees the return of in-person happenings, as well as digital streams.

Initiated in 1982 by UNESCO, International Dance Day is marked annually on April 29 with events across Canada and around the world. The date commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), regarded as the founder of modern ballet.

For over 20 years, The Dance Centre has presented a program of free, informal events for International Dance Day, celebrating the diversity and creativity of Vancouver’s dance scene. The 2022 highlights include:

  • Studio showings of work by Highland ensemble Shot of Scotch Vancouver, flamenco dancer Liat Har Lev, Dumb Instrument Dance, and VDCM Dance Collective, at Scotiabank Dance Centre;

  • Students from Gladstone Secondary School’s renowned dance program in an outdoor showing at Robson Plaza;

  • An immersive audio/dance walk by Alana Gerecke;

  • P. Megan Andrews’ disorientation project at the Roundhouse Community Centre;

  • A digital stream of short films by a diverse group of artists including AMOK PROJECT, Erin Lum, Jhoely Triana Flamenco, Kinesis Dance somatheatro, and Sarah U.

All events are free admission, but some have limited capacity and advance registration is recommended.
