KDocsFF kicks off its special presentation series on February 19 at 7 pm with an online, live Q & A and panel discussion about the gig economy and fair wages.

The timely conversation features filmmakers and film subjects from several works screening online at the social justice–focused festival: The Gig Is Up, which uncovers the real costs of the platform economy through the lives of people working for companies around the world, including Uber and Amazon; Waging Change, which shines a unique spotlight on the challenges faced by restaurant workers trying to feed themselves and their families off tips; and the short film Ride Fair, in which three community organizers with a history of standing up against big tech corporations embark on an uphill political fight to regulate Uber and Lyft in Toronto.

The panel is moderated by Javier Lovera, director of Ride Fair. The talk features Abby Ginzberg, director of Waging Change, as well as two people who appear in the film: Saru Jayaraman, president, One Fair Wage and director of the Food Labor Research Center; and Nikki MG Cole, former national policy director , One Fair Wage.

The Gig Is Up director Shannon Walsh also joins the panel, along with film subject Thorben Wieditz, Ride Fair co-founder.

Viewers can stream the films at the all-online festival via VIFF, from February 18 to 27. Find more information about the opening special presentation here, with tickets and more information about the whole festival here.
