Krisztina Szabó sings Wagner for Valentine's at Vancouver Opera on February 13
The mezzo-soprano takes on two chamber works that show the German master’s romantic side
Vancouver Opera presents Wagner for Valentine’s on February 13 at 7:30 pm in a free performance
Mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó is a favourite of Vancouver Opera audiences in masterworks from Don Giovanni to La bohème.
Those live spectacles at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre are the stuff of dreams during pandemic lockdown, but soon you’ll get to hear the artist take on a double bill of two mesmerizing Richard Wagner chamber works in a new livestreamed performance to mark Valentine’s Day.
Note that Wagner’s work is so epic that it’s a rare sight on the VO stage: The Flying Dutchman was last staged in 2001 in a mindblowing performance.
Okay so that show wasn’t exactly geared to romance. Here, though, you’ll get to hear the German composer’s warmer emotional side. Wagner composed the symphonic poem, Siegfried Idyll, as a surprise birthday serenade to his wife Cosima in 1869. The daughter of Franz Liszt, she had just given birth to their son Siegfried. In the second piece, Wesendonck Lieder, Wagner sets five poems by Mathilde Wesendonck to music.
Leslie Dala takes the podium for the streamed concert, filmed at Christ Church Cathedral with members of the VO Orchestra.
Viewers can sign up and to access the free performance via digital.vancouveropera.ca on February 13 at 7:30 pm, with the performance remaining on the site until the end of the season, June 30.
