It’s a performance that promises to dazzle: for the first time, Vancouver classical-music ensembles Elektra Women’s Choir and Sitka String Quartet will join forces in Lake of Stars.
On-stage will be the 34 voices of Elektra alongside the musicians of Sitka String Quartet: violinists Cassandra Bequary and Karen Gerbrecht; violist Emilie Grimes; and cellist Olivia Blander. Elektra artistic director Morna Edmundson conducts.
Lake of Stars, a program of works in celebration of life and nature, features three world premieres.
The title work by Argentina’s Santiago Veros on a text by Charles Anthony Silvestri is a dramatic, pandemic-inspired composition of hope through darkness.
Teachings of the Water features music by T. Patrick Carrabré on a Squamish text by Rebecca Duncan. This ground-breaking collaboration with Squamish and Interior Salish teachers and elders shows how, in many First Nations cultures, water teaches us about relationships.
The third world premiere is the charming Two Shakespeare Songs by Stephen Smith on texts from As You Like It.
Rounding out the program are Marie-Claire Saindon’s stunning a cappella work, Blinded by a Leafy Crown, and Night by Ramona Luengen in a new version with flute, string quartet, and piano.
Lake of Stars takes place May 14 at 7:30 pm and May 15 at 3 pm at Pacific Spirit United Church (2205 West 45th Avenue).
Tickets and more details are at Elektra Women's Choir.
