Hailing from Little Saskatchewan First Nation in the heart of Manitoba’s Interlake Region, Leonard Sumner is an Anishinaabek MC, singer, and songwriter and one of Winnipeg’s greatest modern bards.

Sumner performs live at the Chan Centre on March 5 at 8 pm as part of Chan Centre’s Decolonize the Chan series, supported by presenting sponsor RBC.

Sumner’s new album, Thunderbird, is unflinching in its narratives, bringing home deep truths about residential schools, urban life, and the loss of his mother through a fusion of hip-hop, R&B, and country.

Released on his daughter’s first birthday, the disc is named in honour of his mother, whose spirit name is Brown Thunderbird.

With his head-bobbing beats and smoky flow, Sumner will take audiences on a journey of love, grief, pain, and resilience.
