Get ready to end October on a fiesta-worthy note, when Locarno brings the celebratory spirit of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) to the Chan Centre.
On October 30 at 8 pm, the cross-pollinating multipiece band will take over the Chan Shun Concert Hall with its exuberant energy, showing how it keeps adding layers to its traditional roots.
Led by Juno-winning artist Tom Landa on vocals, guitar, and the eight-stringed jarana, the group has expanded its early Afro-Cuban and son jarocho folk-inspired sound to include influences of African soukous, Mexican marimba music, Venezuelan joropo, Brazilian forró, and other bold, idiomatic Latin styles.
Born in Mexico, Landa has called Canada home since his early teens and is well-known for his time with acclaimed Celtic/folk/fusion group the Paperboys.
Joining Landa in Locarno are Kalissa Landa (violin), Robin Layne (marimba, congas, and timbales), Pedro Mota (guitar and vocals), JeanSe LeDoujet (bass), Liam MacDonald (drums, congas, and pandero), Jocelyn Waugh (trumpet), and Nick La Riviere (trombone).
The Chan Centre has also partnered with the Mexican Consulate to feature a small exhibition by artist Adrian Edgar in the lobby that night to mark Dia de los Muertos.
