Massey Theatre is hosting globally beloved rock collective Tamikrest for a heady night of desert blues on May 26, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Hailing from the Sahara Desert region of Mali in West Africa, Tamikrest are bringing their inimitable sound to the Lower Mainland for one night only, fresh off an international tour and the success of their acclaimed latest album Tamotaït.

“Tamikrest” means junction, connection, knot, or coalition in Tamasheq. Though the group’s music takes root in Ishumar rock or Tuareg blues, it borrows from various international influences as well as from neighbouring cultures.

Formed in Kidal—the capital of the eighth region of Mali—Tamikrest features musicians from across Mali, Niger, Algeria, and France. The group incorporates heavy American rock, reggae, world music, and folk to create a sound that is diverse and utterly unique.

Their resulting music, born of a homeland mired in political turbulence, speaks of a global yearning for peace.

Tickets are available at Massey Theatre.
