LEGENDARY CHILDREN’S BOOK author-illustrator Dav Pilkey’s comics arguably defined a generation of kids—elementary-school libraries simply wouldn’t be complete without copies of Captain Underpants, Dog Man, or Cat Kid Comic Club lining their shelves.
Now, audiences get to see Pilkey’s beloved characters come to life on stage in TheaterWorksUSA’s Dog Man: The Musical at the Massey Theatre.
The musical’s plot follows 5th graders George and Harold, who are best friends and budding comic artists. One day they decide to turn their favourite character, Dog Man, into the star of his own musical, and his zany adventures unfold before the crowd.
Dog Man is the world’s ultimate good boy, with a canine head and policeman body. All before George and Harold’s lunchtime, he fights his way through cyborg fish Flippy and an army of Beasty Buildings in order to reach and defeat his arch nemesis, Petey the evil cat.
Pilkey’s original Dog Man comic was published in 2016, as a spin-off to the Captain Underpants series. He has since released 12 other comics in the series—all cleverly named—including 2018’s Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas, and 2020’s Dog Man: Grime and Punishment.
A brand-new addition to the series titled Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder will be available as of March 19, 2024.
