MISCELLANEOUS Productions, Canada’s leading community-engaged arts organization working with underserved and at-risk children and youth, presents MUSIC 101—a series of free two-hour workshops—on October 5, 19, 26, and November 2 before a live audience at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music.

MUSIC 101 fosters connections with musicians and composers, sharing knowledge and resources with multi-barriered youth and young adults who are interested in pursuing careers in the music industry but may not otherwise have access to professional training. The program’s full name, the Susan Pond Music 101 Program for Youth, honours the important contributions made to MISCELLANEOUS Productions by late music teacher and activist Susan Pond.

Each Saturday workshop features an interview with a music-industry professional, unplugged live and video components of their music, and roundtable discussions with the youth in attendance. Workshop topics include accessing grants, scholarships, and bursaries; creating an electronic press kit; harm reduction and substance misuse; sexual harassment and mental health in the music industry; and digital hygiene, privacy, and dealing with cyber bullying.

Participants are encouraged to be aware of their own comfort levels and potential triggers; the series is recommended for audience members age 11 and up. Workshops will be videotaped and posted to the MISCELLANEOUS Productions YouTube account after the series wraps.

Participating panelists include Grammy Award-winning musician Chin Injeti on October 5; Cree-Saulteaux film and music artist Renae Morriseau on October 19; singer-songwriter Dawn Pemberton on October 26; and multi-instrumentalist Jaya Story on November 2.
