Diverse sounds of the African diaspora are featured in MOA’s music series
MOA’s Sound House: Take Root presents Sade Awele, Maia Wallace, and Brandon Bwanakocha at MOA’s Haida House on November 25 at 7 pm.
SANKOFA IS A term that originated in present-day Ghana that means to “go back and get it”, meaning the act of taking pride in your heritage in order to move forward. It’s the inspiration behind Sankofa: African Routes, Canadian Roots. the recently launched feature exhibition at Museum of Anthropology at UBC. The concept also forms the basis of the next installment of Sound House: Take Root.
Sound House, which takes place at MOA’s Haida House, is the museum’s music series, now in its third season.
The November 25 lineup showcases the diversity of sounds of the African diaspora and features performances by Sadé Awele, Maia Wallace, and Brandon Bwanakocha.
Awele is a Nigerian-born R&B singer who pays tribute to her Yoruba and Ibo ancestry in her music. Genre-bending vocalist Wallace was born in the UK and spent her childhood living in Ghana, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. Bwanakocha, who also goes by Bwanaz, is a Zimbabwean-born emerging rap artist.
Tickets, $20, include museum admission; free for Indigenous people.
