Rumble Theatre's interactive New Societies strives for utopia, online December 10 and 11

Strategic board game meets theatre in all-ages competition to build an ideal society

Rumble Theatre streams New Societies on December 10 and 11

EARTH IS in turmoil and there’s a chance to set up a new society on a newly discovered, uninhabited planet. But can we learn from our past mistakes?

That’s the set up for a mega-game of collaboration and competition being staged online by Rumble Theatre. Based on a hit quarantine production created by Vancouver-Toronto-based Re:Current Theatre, New Societies melds the concepts of digital strategic board game and a theatrical storyline.

It’s all shaped by the choices you make as you play—whether you choose to participate with friends or family members in teams of up to six, or take part solo. Kids of ages 10 and up have reportedly loved renditions of New Societies in previous installations across the country—and don’t be surprised if they help you win.

Guided by a set of facilitators, you’ll be placed in groups over a custom online platform, and you’ll work together or compete against other players to build your Utopia. But be careful: there are seven other societies also creating an ever-growing and responsive landscape. As any serious gamer knows, land and resources will become key. Think digital Catan, if it featured immersive scenography and soundscapes, but had higher stakes.
