New Works presents the world premiere of The Biting School’s Zahak, The Serpent King, a mesmerizing production inspired by a Persian myth. Performances take place at The Annex at 8 pm on November 30, December 1, and December 2, with a post-show artist talkback on December 1.

Zahak was a prince who made a pact with the devil and killed his own father. The devil kissed him on the shoulders, and there grew two snakes, inflicting pain and fear. Each time Zahak cut them off, the snakes would grow again. There’s only one way he can calm them down—and it’s by killing two young men every day, and feeding their brains to the snakes.

Directors Aryo Khakpour and Arash Khakpour invite audiences into a mysterious blend of physical theatre, dance, and surrealist imagery in a quest for freedom that delves into the darkness of oppression and power.
