Do you want to know why wreaths are hung over doors during the holidays? Did you ever wonder why the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah called "Festival of Light?"

Or did you know that New Year is celebrated by different cultures, in different ways, at different times of year? There’s a Chinese, New Year, Korean New Year, Persian New Year, a Western New Year—the list goes on!

Traditions are an expression of cultural identity, providing insight into one’s history, religion, values, and society. They can be expressed in many ways: through, stories, language, food, music, lighting candles and decorating trees.

One of the main goals of the North Shore Culture Compass is to reflect the diverse traditions, cultures, religions, and communities that span North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. You can head to the Intangibles & Stories Category of the North Shore Culture Compass to learn more about these cultural traditions and celebrations.

Many of the traditions that are associated with specific days or dates can be found in the You are Here fundraising calendars. Holidays and religious observances included in the calendar were researched in collaboration with IMPACT North Shore to reflect the area’s cultural make up.

The calendars make excellent gifts for your team, friends, or family, especially for art lovers and fans of natural and architectural gems on Vancouver's beautiful North Shore. All proceeds go to the North Shore Culture Compass. These unique calendars are $20 each and contain 12 images created by local artists depicting North Shore scenes. The North Shore Culture Compass and North Van Arts would like thank the 12 artists for their generosity in providing their work to support the 2022 calendar. Greeting cards are also available to purchase here.
