March 8 is International Women’s Day, and this year the theme is #BreakTheBias. That’s exactly what five female artists are doing in a dynamic exhibition at North Van Arts.
I wanted to go on a Space Walk but I had nothing to wear runs at CityScape Community ArtSpace (335 Lonsdale Avenue) until April 14.
It all started with an article highlighting the misfitting space suits that prevented women from taking part in a space mission. Upon reading it, a collective of female artists—Ilze Bebris, Kiku Hawkes, Marcia Pitch, Ruth Scheuing, and Catherine M. Stewart—became inspired to examine the androcentric world of space, celebrating the achievement of women in science while exploring the barriers women still face in space travel and beyond.
Using a vast array of mediums including assemblage, photography, weaving, textiles, printmaking, and media, this exhibition explores the trials of inhabiting a woman’s body and the barriers women face in society.
On Saturday March 12, Ilze Bebris, Marcia Pitch, and Kiku Hawkes, will be offering a free, family friendly, Dressed for Space, workshop where you can build your own space travel suit. All materials will be provided, including a 10" stand. Registration is required.
CityScape Community ArtSpace is a contemporary, interactive public art gallery in North Vancouver and is always free for the public to visit. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturday noon to 5 pm.
